Research Interests

My research seeks to understand the biochemical and cellular factors that underlie muscle function and fuel utilization, with a specific focus on the role of myoglobin in this process. This research is important in terms of discovering the underlying mechanisms involved with the positive health benefits of physical activity and exercise, which is important in children and adults alike. The degree to which myoglobin and other proteins functionally respond to nutrition (especially fatty acids and their derivatives) and fitness remains to be fully elucidated, and very little is known about these questions during development or pregnancy. My studies leverage structural, functional and evolutionary biology using sequence analysis, molecular modelling, protein structure prediction, and protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions using Docking and molecular dynamic simulations. As part of the ACNC Informatics Team, I work with investigators to perform bioinformatics analysis of RNA-Seq data, microbial and metagenomics analysis.
